The Servant’s Light

Every Chanukah Menorah has a special candle called the Shamash Light.

The Shamash candle is the servant candle, the ministering candle. This candle carries the first light and lights all the other candles. It’s not just the Shamash. It’s the Shamash light. There’s a profound connection here. Messiah is the Shamash of the Lord, “the Servant of the Lord.” He is also “the Light of the World,” the Light that lights up the light of man. He is the Shamash Light. The two go together. It means the one who serves the Lord, will be a light. The one who does the will of God, will shine. The more you serve and obey the Lord, do the will of God with all your heart, mind, soul, and strength, the more you will shine with the light of God. The more your life will be radiate with His glory. If you’re not shining, chances are that you’re not serving the Lord – not with all your heart. Serve the Lord with gladness and you will shine with the radiance of God. Your light will light up the lives of those around you, for you, in Messiah… are the Shamash light.
